From a Moroccan tree to your bathroom

Oil from a tree that grows almost only in south-west Morocco

Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), which grows almost only in south-west Morocco. Amazigh women's cooperatives crack the nuts by hand, and UNESCO recognises the know-how around the tree as intangible cultural heritage.

If you grew up with coconut oil on your hair, the idea is familiar: a plant oil to smooth the ends. Argan is lighter and less sticky, which matters in Indonesia's humid heat.

Four everyday problems argan can help with

Argan is a finishing oil. It helps with how hair and skin feel, not with the cause.

Greasy roots, dry ends

My roots look flat by noon but my ends are rough

Use argan only on mid-lengths and ends, 2–3 drops. Keep it off the roots; it will not fix a greasy scalp.

After heat styling or colour

My hair is frizzy after straightening

A drop or two smooths the surface. It does not fully protect from heat: lower the temperature too.

Under a hijab

My hair is flat and tangled under my hijab

Ends only, a few drops, and five minutes to absorb before you dress. Wash regularly: oil does not replace a clean scalp.

Dry body skin

My legs and elbows feel dry after the shower

Press a few drops onto damp skin or mix one into your lotion. It seals moisture; it is not a moisturiser by itself.

How to use it

Where it goes, and how much

Less than you think. Two to three drops is enough for shoulder-length hair.

Hair

Towel-dry, rub 2–3 drops between your palms and smooth from mid-length to ends. On a dry, tight scalp only, massage 5–6 drops 20–30 minutes before washing.

Skin

Choose a product made for face or body. A few drops over a moisturiser help it stay soft. Skip it if you break out easily.

Before you buy

What to check before buying argan on Shopee

The word Moroccan on a title tells you almost nothing.

01

Ingredient list

Pure argan oil reads Argania spinosa kernel oil. Many argan hair oils are mostly silicone (look for dimethicone).

02

BPOM and halal

Check the BPOM notification number on the pack in the Cek BPOM app, and the halal logo if it matters to you.

03

Price and bottle

A large, very cheap bottle is almost certainly diluted. Dark glass protects the oil from light.

Tips

Tips so it works for you

Small habits that keep argan oil light.

01

Start with 2 drops

Add a drop only if your ends still feel dry.

02

Ends only

Keep it from the roots down to mid-length and your hair stays light.

03

Look for Argania spinosa

That is the name of pure argan oil on the label.

From Morocco to Indonesia

The argan tree and the traditional knowledge used to extract its oil are rooted in south-west Morocco. In Indonesia, argan oil arrives through different brands, sizes and formulas sold locally.

The word ‘Moroccan’ on a package does not always mean the product was made or packed in Morocco. Look at the ingredient list, manufacturer, manufacturing country, size and directions for each product.

Choose how you want to use it

Skin, hair and body have different needs. Start with the area you want to care for to find the most relevant uses, rituals and products.

What to read on the label

For a single-ingredient product, the ingredient list should be short and name Argania spinosa kernel oil. Serums, face oils and body oils may feature argan on the front while combining it with other oils, silicones, fragrance or active ingredients. That is not automatically a problem, but the product should be assessed as a blend rather than as pure argan oil.

Also check volume, packaging, intended area and maker details. A small dropper bottle may be intended for the face, while a pump or hair serum can use a different dose. Price becomes meaningful only after the formats and sizes are genuinely comparable.

What changes when you buy through a marketplace

A local listing makes delivery and payment easier, but marketplace photos and titles still need to be read alongside the product information. Open the product page, note when it was last checked, then confirm price, stock, size and composition again on Shopee before paying.

If two options look similar but one omits the ingredient list or directions, the product with clearer information is usually the better place to begin. Then choose for the actual need—face, hair, body or post-hammam care—not simply because argan appears prominently on the bottle.
