The hammam soap

Savon beldi: olives, steam and a kessa glove

Savon beldi is a thick, dark brown paste traditionally made from crushed olives and an alkali. In the hammam it goes on warm, damp skin, softens the surface and prepares it for the kessa glove.

The idea will feel familiar from mandi lulur: a weekly body ritual to soften and clear rough skin, done unhurried and followed by moisture.

Four problems black soap suits

It softens and cleanses body skin. It is not for the face, and it does not change skin colour.

Rough elbows, knees, heels

My elbows and heels are rough and dull

Black soap, then a light kessa, once a week. Moisturise right after.

After a sweaty, dusty day

My body feels sticky and gritty from the commute

Use it as a cleanser alone, without the kessa. You do not need friction to feel clean.

Dull body skin

My body skin looks dull

Removing dead skin cells helps skin look smoother. It does not lighten skin or fade marks.

Sensitive or bumpy skin

I get red easily or have small bumps on my arms

Skip the kessa. Use black soap only as a gentle cleanser, or choose another product.

How to use it

How to use it, step by step

About a teaspoon is enough for the whole body, once a week, on warm and wet skin.

Body

Shower warm for 5–10 minutes. Spread a thin layer, leave 3–5 minutes, rub gently in circles from the feet upward with a wet kessa, rinse and moisturise within 3 minutes.

Face

Not for the face unless the product is made for it. Facial skin is thinner and reacts faster.

Before you buy

What to check before buying black soap on Shopee

Not every black soap is Moroccan.

01

Origin and ingredients

Traditional savon beldi lists few ingredients, mainly olive oil saponified with potassium hydroxide. African black soap is a different product.

02

BPOM and halal

Check the BPOM number in the Cek BPOM app and the halal logo if it matters to you.

03

Kessa sold separately

Avoid very coarse kessa if your skin is sensitive.

Tips

Tips so it works for you

Make your weekend body ritual feel like a spa.

01

Shower warm first

Five to ten minutes of warm water softens skin so the kessa glides.

02

Gentle circles

Light pressure is enough. You do not need to rub hard.

03

Moisturise right away

Within three minutes of drying off, your skin will feel soft.
