Oily roots, dry ends: where does argan oil belong?

Oily at the roots and dry at the ends is common in hot, humid weather, especially under a hijab. Here is where argan oil goes, how many drops to use, and where to leave it off.

Roots and ends have different jobs

Your scalp produces oil, and in humid weather and with sweat it can look flat within a day. The ends are the oldest part of your hair and have the least oil reaching them, so they dry out from heat styling, colouring, towel rubbing and friction against a hijab.

Argan oil helps the ends. It coats the hair surface so it feels smoother and tangles less. It is not a cleanser, so it cannot fix an oily scalp.

How much, and where

After washing, towel-dry until your hair stops dripping. Put 2–3 drops in your palm for shoulder-length hair, or 4–5 for long hair. Rub your palms together and smooth the oil from mid-length to the ends. Stay away from the roots. Comb with a wide-tooth comb.

If your hair feels heavy or greasy once dry, that was too much. Use one drop fewer next time.

If your scalp is dry, not oily

A tight, flaky or dry-feeling scalp can take a little argan oil before washing. Massage 5–6 drops into the scalp with your fingertips for 3–5 minutes, leave it 20–30 minutes, then shampoo as usual. Skip this if you break out along the hairline or forehead.

If your scalp itches constantly, has a rash, heavy dandruff or you are losing a lot of hair, oil is not the answer. See a dermatologist.

If you wear a hijab

A hijab keeps your hair warm and slightly damp, so roots go flat faster. Use argan oil only on the ends and keep it light. Let it absorb for about five minutes before you put your hijab on, so it does not mark the fabric.

Wash regularly. Sweat and oil build up under fabric that stays on for hours, and no oil product can replace a clean scalp.

Choosing argan oil on Shopee

Read the ingredient list, not the title. Pure argan oil is listed as Argania spinosa kernel oil. Many products called argan hair oil are mostly silicone with a little argan. That is not wrong, but it is not pure argan oil.

A dark glass bottle protects the oil from light. Choose a product sold for hair or skin care, not for cooking.

Common questions

Questions about this care

Can I put argan oil on greasy roots?

No. Keep it on mid-lengths and ends. Extra oil on roots makes hair go flat faster.

Does argan oil stop hair loss?

There is no strong evidence for that. If you are losing a lot of hair, see a doctor.

How is it different from coconut oil?

Both coat the hair. Argan is lighter and less sticky; coconut oil is heavier. Choose by how thick your hair is.

Can teenagers use it?

Yes, with very little on the ends. Test a drop behind the ear first.
