A welcome, a finishing touch, a hammam scent

Moroccan rose water comes from damask roses (Rosa damascena) grown around Kelaat M'Gouna at the foot of the High Atlas. The petals are picked by hand at dawn and steam-distilled; each May the valley celebrates the Moussem des Roses.

Indonesian women know air mawar too, from mandi kembang and wedding rituals. In Morocco it is part of daily life: a few drops on a guest's hands, a splash into the ghassoul paste, a mist on the face.
