What this routine helps with

Refresh clean skin and prepare it for moisturiser.

Anyone whose face feels hot, tired or sticky in the heat, including under a hijab.

In Morocco, rose water is a gesture of welcome and a finishing step after washing. In Indonesia's heat it does something very practical: it cools and lightly hydrates a clean face before moisturiser.

This routine does not treat any skin condition. It is a refreshing step you can do once or twice a day.

Before you begin

A pure rose water (Rosa damascena flower water) in a spray bottle Your usual cleanser and moisturiser A clean towel

  1. Step 1

    Cleanse as usual

Wash your face with your usual cleanser and rinse with lukewarm water. Pat gently so skin stays slightly damp.

  2. Step 2

    Mist the rose water

Close your eyes and spray 2–3 times from about 20 cm away. For a calmer result, spray onto cotton and pat on.

  3. Step 3

    Moisturise while damp

Apply your moisturiser within a minute, while skin is still damp, so it holds the water.

  4. Step 4

    Sunscreen in the morning

In the morning, finish with sunscreen. Rose water does not replace it.

Keep the bottle in the fridge for a cooling mist. Close your eyes while spraying. Stop if skin turns red or itchy: fragrance can irritate sensitive skin.

What rose water does, and does not do

It refreshes and lightly hydrates skin that is already clean. It does not treat acne, dark spots or ageing, and it does not replace moisturiser or sunscreen.

Under a hijab

Mist your face and let it dry for a minute before covering. Rose water is not sticky, so it will not mark the fabric.
