Tradition

Henna and inai: one plant, two traditions

Henna is the dried, ground leaf of Lawsonia inermis. In Morocco it is used on the hands and feet for celebrations, above all the bridal henna night, and on hair as a conditioning and colouring treatment.

Indonesian women know the same plant as inai, from the malam bainai. The difference is how Moroccan women prepare it for hair and the circle of women around the ritual.

Four real reasons Indonesian women use henna

Henna colours and conditions. It is not a way to go black or blonde.

Grey hair

I have grey hairs I want to cover

Henna stains grey strands orange-red. The result is warm, not natural black, and it builds with each use.

Flat, dull hair

My hair looks dull and flat

Henna coats the hair and adds a warm gloss, especially in sunlight.

Avoiding chemical dye

I want to avoid chemical hair dye

Natural henna is plant-based. It still needs a strand test and cannot be mixed with chemical dye.

Hands and feet for a celebration

I want henna for a wedding or Eid

Use only natural henna. Never black henna: it can burn skin.

How to use it

How to use it

Strand test first. Natural henna is orange to brown and takes hours, not minutes.

Hair

Mix about 100 g powder with warm water to thick yoghurt, apply to clean dry hair, cover 1–3 hours, rinse well and condition. Colour deepens over two days.

Tips

Tips so it works for you

How to get a gorgeous, even colour.

01

Try a hidden strand first

So you know the colour you will get before you do it all.

02

Be patient: 1–3 hours

The longer it stays, the deeper the colour.

03

Choose natural henna

Natural henna is orange to brown and lists only Lawsonia inermis.
