Moroccan henna (inai): the hair ritual and bridal tradition, and how to do it safely

Indonesian women know inai from weddings. In Morocco, henna is also a hair ritual and the centre of the bridal henna night. Here is how Moroccan women use it, how to colour and condition hair with it, and why you must avoid black henna.

What Moroccan henna is

Henna is the dried, ground leaf of the Lawsonia inermis plant. Mixed with warm water it releases a dye that stains skin and hair in shades of orange to reddish brown. In Morocco it is used on hands and feet for celebrations, and on hair as a conditioning and colouring treatment.

It is the same plant behind Indonesia's inai, so the idea is familiar: the difference is the Moroccan way of preparing it and the rituals around it.

The bridal henna night

Before a wedding, Moroccan women gather for the henna night. The bride's hands and feet are decorated with henna, surrounded by female relatives and friends, with songs and sweets. It is a moment of blessing and community among women.

Indonesian women will recognise the idea from the malam bainai tradition in several regions.

Henna for hair, step by step

1. Use natural henna powder with a single ingredient, Lawsonia inermis. Strand-test first on a small hidden lock.

2. Mix about 100 g powder (shoulder-length hair) with warm water to the texture of thick yoghurt. Many Moroccan recipes let the paste rest for a few hours so the dye releases.

3. Apply to clean, dry hair, section by section, and cover with a plastic cap for 1–3 hours. The longer it stays, the deeper the colour.

4. Rinse thoroughly with water, then condition. The colour deepens over about two days.

On dark hair henna gives a warm red-brown glow rather than a visible dye. On lighter or bleached hair the red is much stronger.

Choose natural henna

Natural henna is orange to brown and lists only Lawsonia inermis. If a pack promises black in a few minutes, pick another one.

Henna stains, so keep an old towel and gloves ready.

Good to know before you start

Try a hidden strand first so you love the colour before you do it all.

If your hair is bleached or chemically straightened, ask your stylist how it will take the colour.

Common questions

Questions about this care

Is Moroccan henna different from Indonesian inai?

It is the same plant. The difference is the preparation and the rituals, such as the bridal henna night.

Can I wear henna on my hair under a hijab?

Yes. Rinse thoroughly so no paste or colour transfers to the fabric, especially for the first two days.

Will henna turn my dark hair red?

On dark hair it gives a warm red-brown glow in sunlight, not a bright red.

Is black henna safe?

No. It usually contains PPD and can cause severe skin reactions. Use only natural henna.
