What this routine helps with

Add a warm red-brown glow and a conditioned feel to hair.

Hair that has not been bleached or chemically straightened. Strand-test first.

Moroccan women use henna on their hair as a conditioning and colouring treatment, and on their hands and feet for celebrations such as the bridal henna night. Indonesian women know the same plant as inai.

Natural henna gives orange to reddish-brown tones. It is not a way to go black or blonde.

Before you begin

100 g natural henna powder, a single ingredient: Lawsonia inermis Warm water, a non-metal bowl and spoon Gloves, a plastic cap and old clothes

  1. Step 1

    Strand test

Apply a little paste to a hidden lock, wait the full time and rinse to see the colour you will get.

  2. Step 2

    Mix the paste

Mix about 100 g powder with warm water to the texture of thick yoghurt. Many Moroccan recipes let it rest for a few hours.

  3. Step 3

    Apply and wait

Apply to clean, dry hair section by section and cover with a plastic cap for 1–3 hours. A longer wait gives a deeper colour.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse and condition

Rinse thoroughly with water, then condition. The colour deepens over about two days.

Never use black henna: it usually contains PPD and can burn skin. Henna stains skin and fabric: protect both. Rinse thoroughly before covering your hair with a hijab.

What to expect on dark hair

On dark hair, henna gives a warm red-brown glow in sunlight rather than a visible dye. On lighter or bleached hair the red is much stronger.

Check the label

Natural henna lists only Lawsonia inermis. Anything that stains black within minutes or lists para-phenylenediamine should not be used.
