Moroccan black soap (savon beldi): how to use it and who it suits

Rough elbows, dull skin after a sweaty day, or make-up and dust that never quite comes off? Here is how to use Moroccan black soap with a kessa glove, how often, and who should be careful.

What it is

Savon beldi is a thick, dark brown paste traditionally made from crushed olives mixed with an alkali. On warm, damp skin it softens the surface so a kessa, the rough hammam glove, can lift dead skin. Genuine black soap is alkaline, so it can feel drying: moisturiser afterwards is part of the routine.

How to use it, step by step

1. Shower in warm water for 5–10 minutes until skin is damp and soft.

2. Spread about a teaspoon of paste with a little water in a thin layer over the body. Keep it off the face unless the product is made for it.

3. Leave it 3–5 minutes. Do not let it dry.

4. Wet the kessa and rub gently in circles from the feet upward. Light pressure is enough; skin should never sting.

5. Rinse well with warm water, pat dry and moisturise within 3 minutes.

Start once a week. If skin turns red or stings, go to once a fortnight.

Who it suits

Perfect for rough or dull body skin, like elbows, knees and heels, and for anyone who wants a deep weekly clean in the heat.

Keep it for the body, not the face, and once a week, so your skin stays soft.

Choosing black soap on Shopee

Check the ingredient list: traditional black soap has few ingredients, mainly olive oil saponified with potassium hydroxide. Fragrance is fine. Black soap is not always Moroccan: West African black soap is a different product, so check the origin. Buy the kessa separately and avoid very coarse ones if your skin is sensitive.

Common questions

Questions about this care

Can I use it on my face?

Not body black soap. Facial skin is thinner; use only a product made for the face.

Can I use it every day?

No. Daily exfoliation thins the skin and makes it sting.

Will it remove dark spots or acne marks?

No. It removes dead skin cells but does not change skin colour.

Is it fine if I wear a hijab?

Yes, it is a body routine. Go lighter on the neck and covered areas that sweat a lot.
