What this routine helps with

Enjoy the traditional hammam use of nila with black soap.

Anyone who loves a weekend hammam ritual.

In the hammam, nila is mixed into black soap or a scrub, applied with a kessa glove and rinsed off. It is part of the weekly ritual and of bridal preparation.

Think of it as a pampering step: the goal is skin that feels smooth and even.

Before you begin

Nila powder or a nila soap Moroccan black soap, a kessa, an old towel

  1. Step 1

    Warm up

Shower warm for 5–10 minutes until your skin is soft and damp.

  2. Step 2

    Mix

Stir a pinch of nila into a teaspoon of black soap with a little water.

  3. Step 3

    Smooth on

Spread thinly, leave a few minutes, then rub lightly with a wet kessa.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse and moisturise

Rinse until clear, pat dry and moisturise within 3 minutes. Any faint blue tint washes off.

Follow the amounts on your nila pack. Rinse until the water runs clear.

If a little blue stays

A second wash with soap and warm water takes it away.
