Moroccan care at home

Hammam at home: a Moroccan ritual in 45 minutes in your own bathroom

You do not need a marble steam room. Here is the order of a Moroccan hammam you can copy in an ordinary bathroom, what to buy first, and what you can skip.

The five steps

A hammam follows one order: warm the body with steam, apply black soap (savon beldi), rub gently with a kessa glove, rinse, then moisturise. Ghassoul clay on hair or body is a sixth, optional step.

Once a week or once a fortnight is enough. Doing it more often thins the skin and makes it sting.

The 45-minute order

0–10 min: run hot water with the door closed until the bathroom fogs, then wash with warm water. Not too hot: red skin means the water is too hot.

10–20 min: spread a thin layer of black soap over the body and leave it 3–5 minutes. Keep it off the face and sensitive areas.

20–30 min: wet the kessa and rub in small circles from feet upward. Light pressure is enough. Rinse.

30–40 min (optional): mix ghassoul with warm water into a paste and leave it on hair or body for 5 minutes, then rinse completely.

40–45 min: pat dry and moisturise within 3 minutes.

What to buy first, and what to skip

Start with black soap and a kessa. Ghassoul and argan oil are optional: use the moisturiser you already have. You do not need a full set.

No time? Do the 20-minute version: steam, black soap, kessa, moisturiser. With sensitive skin, skip the kessa or use it only on feet and elbows.

Make it feel like a spa

Dim the lights, put on some music and give yourself the full 45 minutes. The ritual is about slowing down.

Put your hair up, keep a glass of water nearby and finish with moisturiser. A hijab changes nothing: it all happens in your private bathroom.

Once a week or once a fortnight. More often can thin and irritate the skin.

Is it okay on my period?

Yes, but choose the light 20-minute version if you feel weak or have cramps.
