Moroccan traditions

Hammam is a rhythm, not a shopping list

What to keep when bringing a Moroccan bathing tradition into your own bathroom.

Moroccan hammam interior

A place before it became a product set

In Morocco, hammam care belongs to a bathing setting and a shared cultural practice. Black soap, ghassoul and the kessa glove are familiar parts of that setting. An at-home routine can borrow the order of care, but a collection of jars does not reproduce the social space or the experience of being there.

Choose what you want to try, rather than adding every step

Preparation makes the routine easier; cleansing removes the day's residue; rinsing finishes that work. Optional clay or an argan finish comes after a decision about what you actually want to do. In a hot, humid bathroom, adding more heat or more layers is not the point of appreciating a Moroccan tradition.

Leave room for a shorter version

A 15-minute cleansing routine and a longer hammam-inspired bath can both have a place in your week. The shorter version leaves steps out rather than rushing them all. Start with what you can comfortably do, then explore the cultural story and ingredients when you want to go further.
