The fragrant water distilled from damask rose petals in the Dadès valley, used in the hammam and as a face mist.
The roses of the Dadès valley
Moroccan rose water comes from damask roses (Rosa damascena) grown around Kelaat M'Gouna at the foot of the High Atlas. The petals are picked by hand at dawn and steam-distilled; each May the valley celebrates the Moussem des Roses.
Indonesian women know air mawar too, from mandi kembang and wedding rituals. In Morocco it is part of daily life: a few drops on a guest's hands, a splash into the ghassoul paste, a mist on the face.
Does this sound like you?
Rose water refreshes and lightly hydrates. It does not treat skin problems.
Hot, sticky face
Mist after cleansing, from the fridge if you can, then moisturise while damp.
Stale hair under a hijab
A light mist on scalp and mid-lengths before you dress freshens it. It does not replace washing.
Harsh ghassoul paste
Replace a third of the water with rose water for a softer paste and a fresh scent.
Dry-feeling skin after cleansing
A mist then moisturiser can help skin feel comfortable. If tightness persists, change your cleanser.
How to use it
Spray with eyes closed, then moisturise within a minute.
After cleansing, mist 2–3 times from 20 cm or pat on with cotton. Moisturise while damp; sunscreen in the morning.
