What this routine helps with

Seal moisture into clean skin at night.

Normal to dry skin, or tired-looking skin. Oily or acne-prone skin should go slowly.

Prickly pear seed oil comes from a cactus fruit that grows across southern Morocco, and it takes a great deal of fruit to press a small bottle. That is why Moroccan women use it by the drop, in the evening, after cleansing.

It is a finishing step, not a treatment. Start slowly: in humid weather any rich oil can feel heavy.

Before you begin

A genuine prickly pear seed oil (Opuntia ficus-indica seed oil) in a dark glass bottle Your usual cleanser

  1. Step 1

    Cleanse and leave skin damp

Wash your face and pat it so it stays slightly damp.

  2. Step 2

    Warm the drops

Put 2–3 drops in your palm and rub your hands together to warm the oil.

  3. Step 3

    Press, do not rub

Press gently onto the face and neck. Do not rub. Leave it to settle.

Patch-test behind the ear first. Start 3–4 nights a week. Use at night only; in the morning, moisturiser and sunscreen are enough.

If your skin is oily or breaks out

Use one drop, once a week, and watch how your skin reacts. If you break out, stop. Any rich oil can feel heavy in humid weather.

Spotting a genuine oil

Genuine oil comes in very small bottles and is expensive. A large cheap bottle is almost certainly diluted.
