What this routine helps with

Decorate hands and feet for a celebration.

Anyone preparing for Eid, a wedding or a girls’ night.

In Morocco, women gather before a wedding for the henna night and decorate hands and feet with natural henna. You already know the idea from inai and the malam bainai.

Invite a friend, put on music and enjoy the evening: the henna does the rest.

Before you begin

Fine natural henna powder (Lawsonia inermis) Warm water, a little lemon juice and sugar, a small cone or applicator Old towel and a free evening

  1. Step 1

    Gather

Invite friends, put on music and set out sweets. The evening is part of the ritual.

  2. Step 2

    Mix the paste

Stir henna powder with warm water, a little lemon juice and sugar into a smooth paste. Let it rest a few hours.

  3. Step 3

    Draw

Fill a small cone and draw your design on clean, dry hands and feet.

  4. Step 4

    Let it set

Keep the henna on for several hours, then scrape it off. Do not wash for a few hours so the colour deepens over a day or two.

Choose natural henna, orange to brown. Keep hands dry for a few hours so the colour deepens.

Make it last

A little oil or rose water on the stain keeps it looking rich for days.
