Ground leaf of Lawsonia inermis, used in Morocco for hair care and for the bridal henna night.

Tradition
Henna is the dried, ground leaf of Lawsonia inermis. In Morocco it is used on the hands and feet for celebrations, above all the bridal henna night, and on hair as a conditioning and colouring treatment.
The same plant is known as inai or mehndi in other traditions, with bridal henna nights of their own. The difference is how Moroccan women prepare it for hair and the circle of women around the ritual.
Does this sound like you?
Henna colours and conditions. It is not a way to go black or blonde.
Grey hair
Henna stains grey strands orange-red. The result is warm, not natural black, and it builds with each use.
Flat, dull hair
Henna coats the hair and adds a warm gloss, especially in sunlight.
Avoiding chemical dye
Natural henna is plant-based. It still needs a strand test and cannot be mixed with chemical dye.
Hands and feet for a celebration
Use only natural henna. Never black henna: it can burn skin.
How to use it
Strand test first. Natural henna is orange to brown and takes hours, not minutes.
Mix about 100 g powder with warm water to thick yoghurt, apply to clean dry hair, cover 1–3 hours, rinse well and condition. Colour deepens over two days.
