What this routine helps with

An unhurried bathing sequence with black soap, a thorough rinse and an optional argan finish.

For readers with time for a slower Moroccan-inspired body-care sequence at home, using only steps and products that feel comfortable.

A Moroccan hammam is a place and a shared tradition, not just a basket of products. At home, you can borrow its sequence without pretending your bathroom is a traditional steam room. Set out a towel, the cleansing product and anything you genuinely plan to use before you begin.

For a warm Indonesian evening, comfort matters more than making the water hotter or the routine longer. The essentials are a manageable cleanse and a thorough rinse. Ghassoul and the argan finish are additions, not a requirement to buy everything at once.

Before you begin

Set out a clean towel and the products you already use for the steps below. Read the directions on any new product before you begin.

  1. Step 1

    Prepare a comfortable warm rinse

Arrange your towel and products within reach. Begin with comfortably warm water, not very hot water. Take a moment to wet the body without trying to recreate a steam chamber.

  2. Step 2

    Cleanse with Moroccan black soap

Use a black-soap product intended for your body and follow its directions for application and rinsing. Work on intact skin and keep the product away from the eyes. More product is not the purpose of this step.

  3. Step 3

Choose the optional clay step, then rinse

If you are using ghassoul, prepare and rinse it exactly as your product directs. Keep any exfoliating gesture gentle; do not combine vigorous scrubbing with another strong exfoliant. You can skip clay or exfoliation and still complete the bathing routine.

  4. Step 4

    Pat dry and finish selectively

Pat the skin with your towel. Keep your usual moisturiser where needed. If you want an argan finishing step, use a body-use formula as directed on areas that feel dry, rather than coating the whole body automatically.

At the end, notice the rhythm as well as the products: preparation, cleansing, rinsing and a considered finish. A home adaptation does not reproduce the shared space of a Moroccan hammam. Keep the cultural story alongside your practical notes, and choose the shorter version when you do not have time for this full sequence.

This is an at-home routine inspired by Moroccan hammam traditions. Its pace and optional steps can be adapted to your bathroom and the products you already own.

Follow the rhythm

Begin with a warm bath or shower, use the cleansing product as directed, then rinse. Exfoliation is a separate step and does not need to be intense every time.

Finish with care

After rinsing and drying the skin, choose finishing care such as a body oil or argan when the formula is suitable. You do not need every ingredient in one session.

Prepare the space, time and choices

A home bathroom does not need to become a steam room. Prepare comfortably warm water, a clean towel, a non-slip surface and one or two products whose directions you have already read. Planning the order before bathing reduces the chance of reaching for the wrong product with wet hands.

The traditional hammam has a social and spatial context that cannot be copied simply by buying products. At home, take inspiration from its rhythm: allowing time for warmth, cleansing, rinsing and attentive body care.

Build a ritual you can repeat

Try black soap as the cleansing step in one session, or ghassoul in another. Use a kessa glove lightly and not on every occasion when your skin does not need it. Argan oil can be the finishing step when its formula and intended area are suitable.

Afterwards, note the product, amount and how the skin felt. Stop if irritation appears and do not chase heat or friction. A good routine is one that is clear, gentle and realistic to repeat in your life in Indonesia.

Common questions

Questions about this routine

Is a home bathroom the same as a traditional hammam?

No. A home routine can borrow its care sequence, but the traditional hammam is also a distinct place and social experience.

What do I need to begin the routine at home?

Comfortably warm water, a towel, a safe surface and one product with clear directions are enough to begin. You do not need to buy the complete sequence.
