How to use ghassoul clay for hair and skin, step by step
Ghassoul (rhassoul) is a Moroccan mineral clay. Mixed with water into a soft paste, it cleans hair, face and body without foam. Here is how to mix it, how long to leave it on, and who should go gently.
What you need and how to mix it
Pure ghassoul powder (the ingredient list should say only ghassoul or rhassoul clay), a glass, ceramic or plastic bowl, a wooden or plastic spoon, warm water and a clean towel. Rose water can replace part of the water.
Put 2 tablespoons of powder in the bowl for shoulder-length hair and add more for long hair. Pour in warm water a little at a time, stirring, until it looks like thick yoghurt: smooth and not dripping from the spoon. Rest 2–3 minutes, then stir again.
For hair and scalp
Wet your hair thoroughly. Apply the paste to the scalp first, then the lengths. Massage gently with your fingertips for 1–2 minutes and leave it for 5 minutes. Do not let it dry on your hair. Rinse until the water runs clear, because leftover clay feels rough. Finish with conditioner or a little oil on the ends, as clay can be drying.
Start once a week. In Indonesia's heat, ghassoul suits an oily scalp that gets flat quickly. If you colour, heat-style or straighten your hair, start with once every two weeks.
For the face
Make the paste a little thicker than for hair. Apply a thin layer to clean skin, avoiding eyes and lips. Leave it 5–10 minutes at most and rinse while it is still damp. Moisturise afterwards.
Oily skin with large pores: 5 minutes once a week. Dry or sensitive skin: skip it, or mix with a little rose water and leave only 2–3 minutes.
Tips for a great first time
If you like, try a little on your inner arm first, and keep the paste away from your eyes.
Ghassoul is its own clay, so follow these amounts rather than a bentonite or kaolin recipe.
Common questions
Questions about this care
Can I use ghassoul instead of shampoo?
Yes, once a week is a good start. It does not foam, so rinse well and use conditioner on the ends.
Is ghassoul the same as bentonite?
No. They are different clays with different results.
Can I use it every day?
No. Once a week is enough; more often can dry hair and skin.
